What is Teeth Whitening?

Teeth whitening, or bleaching, is an effective way to change the colour of your natural teeth, so you can feel more comfortable showing off your smile! Teeth whitening can effectively restore teeth that are dull, stained, darkened, or discoloured due to things like tea, coffee, cola, wine, berries, smoking or general ageing, and it can brighten the natural pigmentation of the teeth. Even traumatic injuries, medications, and fluorosis can affect the colour of your teeth. Unfortunately, brushing and flossing your teeth is not enough to remove these stains.

Types of Teeth Whitening:

In-office Zoom teeth whitening is performed by your dentist at our clinic. It is a bleaching process used to lighten the discoloration of enamel and dentin. The whitening procedure uses the Philips Zoom Advanced Lamp to activate the Zoom 25 percent hydrogen peroxide whitening gel that is applied to your teeth. As the hydrogen peroxide is broken down, oxygen enters the enamel and dentin, and starts the bleaching process, without affecting the structure of the tooth.

In just one appointment, a professional Zoom tooth whitening experience can give you a brilliant and healthy smile that can last for years.

Acora Dental is pleased to provide you with a FREE Consultation to determine if you are a candidate for this incredible one visit treatment. Before deciding whether Zoom in-office teeth whitening is right for you, we will conduct a comprehensive examination of your teeth and gums to ensure proper health, as well as talk with you about your oral hygiene and lifestyle habits to determine if you will benefit from whitening. This will help decide on the whitening product or technique that is best suited for you.

Teeth whitening can also be considered if you are planning other cosmetic procedures, such as veneers or composite bonding, in order to ensure a colour match between your restoration and your natural dentition.

Depending on the condition of your teeth and your particular goals for changing the look of your smile, teeth whitening may not be an ideal solution for every patient. During your consultation and evaluation, we will assess your existing dental work, such as crowns and veneers, which will not respond to conventional whitening agents. If you are not a good candidate for zoom teeth whitening, Acora Dental can offer a multitude of other options that are suitable to help you achieve the healthy smile you are looking for (like porcelain veneers, white filings, dental crowns, or dental bridges).

Treatment time varies from patient to patient but is generally completed in just one 60-minute appointment. A regular teeth cleaning is recommended prior to the actual Zoom teeth whitening session, which will remove plaque and tartar, so the treatment application is even on your enamel. The procedure consists of a short preparation to completely cover the lips and gums, leaving only the teeth exposed. After that, the Zoom hydrogen peroxide whitening gel is applied to the teeth. The gel is then exposed to the Philips Zoom Advanced LED light, which will start to activate the Zoom 25% hydrogen peroxide gel, causing it to penetrate the teeth and break up the stains and discoloration. During this time, you can relax, watch TV, or listen to music. Teeth whitening has never been this safe – and this comfortable!

To help maintain the whitening effects of this treatment, it is important to avoid certain foods and beverages or consume them in moderation to avoid staining your teeth. Do not smoke immediately after treatment – wait for at least two hours. Foods and drinks containing strong colours, like tea, coffee, red wine, cola, or fruit juices, should be avoided for at least 48 hours, or consumed in moderation.

The best way to sustain your results is to follow a good oral care routine at home with regular brushing, flossing, and mouthwash rinsing. It is also important to see your dentist and hygienist regularly for scheduled teeth cleanings.

Anti-sensitivity toothpaste is recommended post-treatment.

If you choose to continue your care with an at-home maintenance program, you can ask us about our custom-fitted take-home whitening trays kit option. Acora Dental can prepare a take-home kit that will include your individual custom-fitted trays, whitening syringes, and instructions.

Bleaching should be done only under a dentist’s care. Sensitivity during the treatment may occur in some cases, and some minor tingling is experienced immediately after the procedure, but always dissipates.

Please note that teeth whitening is an elective cosmetic procedure, so it is typically not covered by dental insurance. The procedure costs are therefore not covered by most insurance plans. During your initial consultation, your options will be discussed to help you decide on the method that fits both your goals and budget.

Professional take-home teeth whitening kits are a fast, safe, and effective way to professionally whiten your teeth while in the comfort of your own home. It usually requires two visits. At the first appointment, an impression (mould) will be made of your teeth in order to fabricate a custom, clear plastic tray. At your second appointment, you will try on the trays to ensure a proper fit, and any necessary adjustments will be made. You will be sent home with your custom trays, along with a whitening gel made up of hydrogen peroxide. The trays are filled with gel and applied over your teeth and worn for 30 minutes a day. It is normal to experience some degree of tooth sensitivity during the course of treatment, but it will subside shortly after you have stopped bleaching.
